My pint sized angel-eyed frenemy…
Blonde, blue-eyed and bursting with little boy character, 2 year old Blakey definitely didn’t see me as his buddy when I began his room makeover from nursery to big boy bedroom! In fact, it’s probably safer to say I was likened to a green eyed monster (and not the friendly kind haha!) This precious little soul was having none of it. He didn’t want a big boy room. He wanted his cot. Period.
Phase 1: Painting day arrived, and the walls were transformed from a safe cream with candy stripes, to a contemporary grey with a dramatic charcoal feature wall…and by the time we left at the end of the day, little Blakey still wasn’t speaking to me…eeeek!! How do you continue with a ‘big boy makeover’ when its’ little resident doesn’t even want it??
[Side note to mama’s doing DIY makeovers – did you know the walls need to be painted at least 10 days – 2 weeks before applying wall decals? Trust me when I say, this makes a fundamental difference to the adherence and longevity of the decals!]
Phase 2: Fast forward to installation day, and I was just a leeeetle bit relieved when, upon arrival, our little client was at school (yes Mommies, it is VERY easy to feel intimidated by a pint-sized human LOL!)
A trendy grey daybed replaced the sleigh cot, and was adorned with pops of colour in the form of scatter cushions and a fire engine red throw over a boyish denim duvet set (the daybed also housed a trundle bed for mom or dad to lie with Blakey to get him to sleep – little did they know that night he was going to sleep through the night ALL ON HIS OWN and for the VERY FIRST TIME!!)
Safety first with toddlers meant that we needed to install a removable safety rail, which sadly does detract a little from the intended aesthetics of the bed, but we kept it sleek and simple so as not to be an eyesore.
Next came the storage bench, offering both a seating place, and 3 generous cubes of storage space for toys, books and odds & ends.
Natural timber book ledges and a comfy denim floor cushion created the perfect little reading nook, and a coordinating bedside/storage table offers a place for a night light, nighttime cups/bottles, and a book or three, plus a whole lot more storage (can you hear mom’s applause…)
Custom made art prints were framed and added to the library wall, and extra special thought was put into the ‘Best Big Brother’ print, as Blake was about to become just that!
A fun wall quote was custom made to take pride of place on the new feature wall, along with 2 eyecatching monochrome teepee shelves, and a stunning red clock.
If you read our previous blog post, you’ll recall me saying the curtains for this makeover were ‘upcycled’ from the playroom makeover… They were the perfect colour and a great fit, so it would have been a shame to part ways…
Last but not least, a beautiful crocheted rug added character to the timber floor, while tying in perfectly with the little man cave palette.
The most rewarding part of this entire project? When Blakey’s mama messaged me excitedly the next day to say our little superhero had slept through for the first time ever, and absolutely loves his big boy space (relief has never felt so good LOL!!)
The next best reward? Blakey looked at me with new (you’re no longer my enemy) eyes the next time I saw him YAY!!!
